R-S-P-E-C-T: Obama Botches Title of Classic Aretha Franklin Song

Only someone who has traveled to all 57 states could get this wrong.

Last night, at the White House’s “Women of Soul” concert, President Obama flubbed the title of one of the most well-known songs in R&B history. While introducing the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, Obama gave tribute to her career and to her contribution to soul music.

Contributions like her hit song “R-S-P-E-C-T.”

That’s right, while reading from his trusty teleprompter, the President fumbled the title of Franklin’s signature anthem “Respect,” turning it into “Rspect” instead.

It was almost as though he was seeing the lines for the first time, like he didn’t need to rehearse them beforehand, which is probably his style. It’s similar to passing a bill to see what’s in it.

Someone who did not offer criticism was Joe Biden, who once said that it only takes three letters to spell “J-O-B-S.”

The good news is that Obama is taking his “year of action” seriously, and he didn’t even need his pen or his phone to make this change.

Obama saw what we all saw: that the word “respect” is old and dusty and needs to be updated, just like the Constitution of the United States.

And, as his Attorney General Eric Holder would say, you don’t have to enforce something that you disagree with, like the law or spelling.

At least we agree on that.
